Why it’s important
Children learn about print in meaningful context. Encouraging your child to use illustrations to create and recall text will help them understand that print carries meaning.
Materials
Markers, pens, pencils, or other writing tools; white paper; photographs of your child (photos with friends or relatives, pictures from a family trip or special event, etc.); glue; stapler; tape
What you do
1. Attach one photo to each piece of paper. Staple the pages together along the left side to create a book.
2. Invite your child to look at the picture in the book. Explain that they may talk about what is happening in each picture, and you will write their words on the page. We’ll make a book about what you like to do using these pictures. Then, we can read the book later with the words we’ve written down.
3. Encourage your child to share their ideas about the pictures. Write down her words as she talks about each picture.
4. When the book is finished, read it with your child. Ask them questions about the book as you read together.
5. Encourage them to use the pictures to help them read the book with a friend or family member.
Movement / Play
Give your child a spoon and have them balance a hard-boiled or plastic egg from one point to another either indoors or out. How quickly can they go? Can they dance as they move?
This helps children strengthen and challenge their balancing skills! (And if you use a plastic or toy egg, it won’t be messy if the egg does drop!)
Math / Science
Ferry Ride Video (Math)
In case you missed it last time, here’s a video of Teacher Lisa riding a ferry boat! What kinds of nature things do you see? How does a boat that big even move?? Talk with your family, give them ideas on how it might work, and draw a picture! (Text or call your teacher for the password to the video!)
Sea Animals (Science)

Read about sea animals and talk about the size, color, and shapes of the animals. Each page names a sea animal. Take time to talk about the beginning letters in each name. Older children can practice writing the names and drawing the picture to match. Younger children can draw the animals, name colors, and say letters. The names of the animals can be googled to learn more about their home and characteristics in the sea.
